LOS ANGELES, California: Dua Lipa has sued Samsung Electronics for at least US$15 million, alleging the company used her image without permission to promote its television sets.
The lawsuit, filed late last week in federal court in California, claims Samsung placed a copyrighted photograph of the singer on the front of cardboard boxes containing televisions sold to consumers.
According to the complaint, the use of the image created the false impression that Lipa endorsed the company's products.
The image at the center of the dispute is titled "Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024." The lawsuit states that Lipa owns all rights, title, and interest in the photograph.
In addition to copyright infringement, the singer accuses Samsung of trademark infringement and violating her publicity rights.
A spokesperson for Samsung declined to comment, saying the company does not discuss pending litigation. Lawyers for Lipa did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The complaint includes screenshots of social media posts and comments that, according to Lipa's lawyers, show consumers believed she was associated with the product.
One screenshot cited in the filing includes a fan comment saying they would buy the television "just because Dua is on it."
The singer, known for hits including Levitating, said she first became aware of the alleged infringement in June last year.
Her attorneys said Samsung was asked to stop using the image but repeatedly refused.
Samsung's alleged unauthorized use of her likeness has "caused and continues to cause dilution" of her "brand identity and commercial goodwill by falsely conveying to the consuming public that she approves of and endorses" the televisions, the complaint said.
Lipa is seeking damages of no less than $15 million, along with other relief to be determined by the court.
